How Image Resizing Works

Resizing recalculates every pixel in the output based on the original image, scaling the whole picture up or down to new dimensions — unlike cropping, the full original content remains visible, just at a different size. When you specify a target in inches or cm, the tool converts that physical size into pixels using your specified DPI (Pixels = Physical Size × DPI), so the same "4 inches" can mean different pixel counts depending on whether you're targeting 72 DPI (screen) or 300 DPI (print).

A Worked Example

Resizing an image to 50% of its original 2000×1500 pixel dimensions gives a new 1000×750 image. Alternatively, specifying "4 inches wide at 300 DPI" for print calculates to 4 × 300 = 1200 pixels wide, with height scaled proportionally to maintain the original aspect ratio (unless you explicitly choose to stretch it).

Common Mistakes to Watch For

When This Tool Helps — and When It Isn't Enough

Useful for preparing images for websites, social media, print, or meeting specific upload size requirements. For significant upscaling needing AI-based detail generation, a dedicated upscaling tool designed for that purpose will produce better results than standard interpolation-based resizing.

File Size & Browser Notes

Resizing happens instantly in your browser regardless of your device — there's no upload queue, and the tool works the same way on a phone, tablet, or desktop without needing an app to be installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will resizing an image to be larger make it blurry?+
Yes, enlarging an image beyond its original resolution stretches existing pixels and typically introduces some blurriness, since no new detail can be created. Resizing down to a smaller size doesn't have this problem.
Does resizing change the image format?+
No, the resizer keeps your original file format (JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG) — only the pixel dimensions change, unless you separately choose to convert the format using one of our converter tools.
What's the difference between resizing and cropping?+
Resizing changes the overall dimensions of the whole image while keeping all of its content, whereas cropping removes part of the image to keep only a selected region. Use our Image Cropper if you need to cut out a specific area instead.
Can I lock the aspect ratio while resizing?+
Yes, keeping the aspect ratio locked prevents the image from looking stretched or squashed; unlocking it lets you set width and height independently if that's what you need.
