How These Document Tools Work

These tools handle common PDF and Word document tasks — merging, splitting, compressing, and converting between formats — directly in your browser wherever possible, so your documents aren't uploaded to an external server for processing.

PDF files store their content in a structured internal format, which is what lets tools like the Page Counter read the exact page count instantly, or the Splitter break a document into individual pages without needing to "guess" where content boundaries are. Conversion tools (PDF to Word, PDF to Image, Word to PDF) work by reading a document's actual embedded text and layout data, which is why documents with real, embedded text convert far more reliably than documents that are scanned images of text.

Scanned Documents vs Native Documents

It's worth knowing the difference before you start: a PDF exported directly from Word or Google Docs contains real, extractable text — these convert and compress cleanly. A PDF that's a photograph or scan of a printed page contains no extractable text at all, just an image — tools like PDF to Word will find little or nothing to extract from a scanned page, since that needs OCR (optical character recognition) rather than direct text extraction.

Choosing the Right Tool

For combining multiple files into one, use PDF Merge. For pulling specific pages out, use PDF Split. For a large scanned document that's too big to email, start with PDF Compressor. Each tool's own page explains its exact method and what kind of source file it works best with.
